At Nutgrove Methodist Primary School, we believe that handwriting is a vital life skill and an essential foundation for successful learning. We are committed to developing confident, fluent and legible writers through a carefully planned, progressive handwriting curriculum that begins in the Early Years and builds systematically through to Year 6.

Our handwriting curriculum is taught explicitly and sequentially, ensuring that every child develops the knowledge, skills and habits needed to become successful writers. From early mark-making and fine motor development to fluent, joined handwriting, each stage of learning builds securely on previous experiences. We prioritise accuracy, correct formation and strong writing habits before developing speed and stamina, enabling pupils to write with confidence across the curriculum.

Through high-quality modelling, regular practice and consistent expectations, we ensure that handwriting supports rather than hinders composition, allowing children to focus on communicating their ideas effectively. By the time pupils leave our school, they are equipped with the handwriting skills needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.

At Nutgrove Methodist Primary School, we utilise Pen Pals Handwriting scheme to teach our approach to handwriting.

Penpals for Handwriting, a comprehensive and highly regarded handwriting programme developed by Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The scheme provides a clear and progressive pathway from early mark-making and motor development in the Early Years through to fluent, confident and legible handwriting by the end of Year 6.

Penpals is built around a carefully sequenced approach, ensuring that children develop handwriting skills step by step. Pupils begin by strengthening their gross and fine motor skills before learning correct letter formation, progressing to letter joins, and finally developing speed, fluency and an individual handwriting style. Each stage builds securely on previous learning, allowing children to develop confidence and success as writers. 

Handwriting is taught through daily, explicit lessons where teachers model letter formation and joins, provide opportunities for guided practice, and reinforce high expectations for presentation. Children are encouraged to develop correct posture, pencil grip and letter formation habits from the very start, helping them to write comfortably, accurately and efficiently. 

As children move through school, they develop increasingly fluent and automatic handwriting so that their transcription skills support, rather than hinder, composition. Our aim is for every child to leave school with handwriting that is neat, legible and efficient, enabling them to communicate their ideas with confidence across the curriculum and beyond.
