English Reading
At Nutgrove, we believe that reading is the key to learning and imagination. Our Reading Curriculum is carefully designed to be progressive, ensuring that children develop strong decoding, comprehension and fluency skills as they move through the school. Using the Reading Framework, our approach supports systematic, evidence-based teaching that equips every child with the skills and confidence to become a lifelong reader.
Central to our curriculum is a rich collection of core texts, carefully chosen for their quality, diversity and appeal. These texts reflect a wide range of authors, cultures, contexts and themes, exposing children to new ideas, perspectives and experiences. Through these stories, poems and non-fiction texts, children are inspired to explore language, develop empathy and engage critically with the world around them.
Our approach to reading combines:
-
Systematic phonics and decoding strategies to build strong foundations
-
Guided and shared reading sessions that develop comprehension and analytical skills
-
Exposure to diverse, high-quality literature to foster a love of reading
-
Opportunities for discussion, reflection and critical thinking
We aim to nurture readers who are:
-
Confident in their reading abilities
-
Curious about stories, ideas and the wider world
-
Engaged with texts from a diverse range of voices
-
Capable of applying comprehension and critical thinking skills across subjects

By providing a carefully sequenced, literature-rich curriculum, we ensure that every child leaves our school not only able to read fluently but also inspired to read widely and think deeply — unlocking endless possibilities for learning, creativity and personal growth.
