PSHE & RSE

At Nutgrovel, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) are taught through the SCARF curriculum – which stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. These five values sit at the heart of everything we do.

SCARF provides a whole-school approach to promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing and achievement. Fully meeting all DfE statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education, and aligned with the PSHE Association Programme of Study, SCARF gives our staff the tools, confidence and high-quality resources needed to deliver an engaging and comprehensive PSHE/RSE programme from Early Years to Year 6.

Through carefully structured lessons, children learn about:

  • developing healthy relationships and friendships

  • staying safe online and offline

  • recognising and managing emotions

  • healthy lifestyles and decision-making

  • valuing diversity and showing respect

  • growing and changing

In addition to classroom lessons, children also experience memorable workshops delivered by trained Coram Life Education educators. These sessions are interactive and fun, featuring Healthy Harold the giraffe and other engaging resources. Topics explored include healthy eating, the body and how it works, friendships and peer influence, and understanding how choices shape health and wellbeing. These workshops also help challenge common misconceptions around risky behaviours, helping children make informed, positive decisions.

Coram Life Education’s work supports our aims for children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and complements Ofsted expectations around personal development, behaviour and welfare. We also recognise the vital role families play in children’s wellbeing, which is why resources and sessions for parents and carers are available to strengthen learning at home.

Together, our SCARF curriculum ensures every child is supported to stay safe, feel cared for, achieve their best, build resilience and develop positive friendships – preparing them for happy, healthy futures.
