English - Writing

At Nutgrove, we are passionate about developing confident, creative writers who can communicate clearly and effectively. Our Writing Curriculum is carefully designed to be progressive, enabling children to build on their knowledge and skills year after year. From Early Years to Year 6, pupils are supported to develop strong foundations in vocabulary, grammar, composition and transcription, gradually mastering the skills they need to write with purpose and imagination.

High-quality literature sits at the heart of our approach. Each unit of writing is inspired by a rich and diverse range of texts, carefully chosen to reflect a variety of authors, cultures, contexts and themes. These high-quality models expose children to powerful language, authentic voices and meaningful stories, helping them broaden their understanding of the world and deepening their appreciation of writing as a tool for expression.

Through shared writing, modelled examples and guided practice, children learn how to craft writing across a wide range of genres — from stories and poetry to persuasive letters, reports and explanations. They are encouraged to develop their own writer’s voice, make thoughtful vocabulary choices and revise their work with increasing independence.

Our aim is to nurture writers who are:

  • Confident in expressing ideas

  • Curious about language and its impact

  • Inspired by diverse, high-quality literature

  • Skilled in writing for a wide range of audiences and purposes

By the time they leave us, children are equipped with the creativity, clarity and confidence they need to thrive as writers throughout their education and beyond.
