Physical Education
Through the teaching of Physical Education, we aim to help the children to improve and develop their mental wellbeing and physical fitness whilst at Nutgrove; this will be done through active school days, specific topics covered in PE, as well as the values and experiences gained through taking part in both individual and team sports and activities. Within our lessons, children are taught how to look after themselves (improving physical fitness, showing awareness of injuries, and warming up effectively etc) and how physical exercise and sport has a positive impact on the entire lives. We look to provide children with sporting opportunities and skills they may not otherwise experience and provide them with essential life skills through the National Curriculum’s requirement for swimming. Through sport and physical activity, alongside our wider school values, our aim is to embed key values of respect and fair play, hard work, commitment, teamwork, and tolerance into the children of Nutgrove. Our impact is that they take this message as they move up through school and beyond.

Nutgrove’s Play Leaders
We value the importance of physical activity throughout the school day. We recognise that this can boost a person’s mood and energise their brain! Therefore, our dedicated Play Leaders, from Year 6, encourage children to participate in physical opportunities at lunch times. Our Play Leaders have been trained as part of our SHAPES SLA with St Helen's Cuncil, to deliver fun and active games. Staff also deliver lunch time clubs such as hockey, football and basketball.
Swimming
Our Year 5 children participate in a block of swimming lessons at Queen's Park Health and Fitness centre. The children are taught key swimming and water safety skills and assessed throughout by their instructors. Any children, who need further lessons after this block has finished, will continue to attend in Year 6. This is because we value swimming and water safety as life skills and we aim for all of our children to be competent in their by the time they leave Year 6.
School Games Mark
Nutgrove Methodist is proud to have received the Gold School Games Mark in July 2025. We believe that this truly reflects our school’s dedication to the promotion of active living and school sport.

The School Games Mark is awarded for schools' commitment to PE and school sport including participation in curricular and extra-curricular activities, intra and inter-school competitions, leadership and volunteering and links with local clubs.
The School Games Mark is directly linked to a schools engagement in school sport and reflects a broad and balanced offer that actively encourages those young people who aren't currently engaged or who are engaged less often.
This is not about provision for a small cohort of young people but needs to consider ALL the school's population.
